OpenAI Plans Major ChatGPT Overhaul Ahead Of Potential IPO
OpenAI is preparing its most significant redesign of ChatGPT to date, aiming to transform the popular chatbot into a comprehensive AI “superapp” that integrates coding tools, AI agents and third-party services. The move is expected to strengthen revenue growth as the company positions itself for a potential future stock market listing.
According to a report by the Financial Times, the initiative forms part of a wider strategic reorganisation at OpenAI as it increases its focus on enterprise customers and intensifies competition with rival AI firms.
Reuters could not independently verify the report, and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
ChatGPT To Evolve Beyond A Chatbot
The planned overhaul is expected to give greater prominence to Codex, OpenAI’s coding-focused product. The company reportedly intends to allocate additional resources to the platform as coding and software development become increasingly important use cases for generative AI.
The updates are expected to begin rolling out in the coming weeks through changes to ChatGPT’s website and mobile applications.
As part of the redesign, OpenAI is reportedly introducing new prompts, recommendations and interface features that encourage users to explore coding assistance, image generation and integrated partner services.
Focus On Enterprise Growth
The changes reflect OpenAI’s growing emphasis on enterprise customers, which have become a major source of revenue for the company.
According to the report, most Codex users are paying customers. Additionally, approximately 2 million businesses currently account for around 40 per cent of OpenAI’s revenue. That figure is expected to rise to 50 per cent by the end of the year as enterprise adoption accelerates.
The strategy highlights OpenAI’s efforts to diversify beyond consumer subscriptions and build a stronger business software ecosystem around its AI products.
New Integrations And AI Agents
The redesigned ChatGPT platform is expected to place greater emphasis on AI agents capable of completing tasks on behalf of users.
Reports suggest that the updated interface will direct users towards a broader range of functions, including software development tools, image creation capabilities and third-party services such as Canva and Booking.com.
By integrating these services more deeply into ChatGPT, OpenAI appears to be pursuing a model similar to “superapps,” where users can perform multiple tasks without leaving a single platform.
Strong User Growth Supports Expansion
OpenAI enters this new phase from a position of considerable scale. Earlier this year, the company disclosed that ChatGPT serves more than 900 million weekly active users worldwide.
The company also reported surpassing 50 million paying consumer subscribers, underscoring the growing demand for AI-powered productivity tools.
These figures provide a substantial user base that OpenAI can potentially leverage as it expands ChatGPT’s capabilities and introduces new revenue-generating services.
IPO Speculation Continues
The reported overhaul arrives amid continued speculation about OpenAI’s long-term plans for a public listing.
Reuters reported in May that the company was preparing a confidential filing for a U.S. initial public offering. However, Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has previously stated that OpenAI is not focused on a specific timeline and will pursue an IPO only when it considers the timing appropriate.
If implemented successfully, the planned ChatGPT transformation could strengthen OpenAI’s position in both consumer and enterprise AI markets while supporting future growth ambitions.
