TikTok Lawsuit Settled in Three Youth Cases

TikTok Settles Three Youth Addiction Lawsuits Ahead of California Trial

TikTok has agreed to settle three lawsuits brought by young people who alleged that social media companies designed their platforms to be addictive and harmed their mental health, according to a lawyer representing the plaintiffs.

The settlement terms remain confidential and are subject to the completion of written settlement agreements, plaintiffs’ lawyer Joseph VanZandt said on Monday. TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    Bellwether Cases Reach Settlement

The three lawsuits were among thousands of similar cases consolidated before the Los Angeles Superior Court in California. They had been selected as bellwether, or test, cases from approximately 3,300 lawsuits overseen by Judge Carolyn Kuhl.

Bellwether cases are commonly used to assess how juries may respond to similar claims. Consequently, their outcomes often influence settlement discussions and the valuation of remaining cases.

Although TikTok has settled these three lawsuits, the plaintiffs’ claims against Meta Platforms, Google’s YouTube and Snap Inc’s Snapchat will continue. A trial involving those companies remains scheduled for October.

    Plaintiffs’ Allegations

The plaintiffs were identified only by their initials because they are minors.

According to VanZandt, S.J., a 15-year-old girl from Illinois, alleged that social media platforms contributed to self-harm, anxiety, depression, addiction and an eating disorder.

Another plaintiff, P.M.Y., a 15-year-old from New Jersey, alleged addiction, depression and self-harm. Meanwhile, K.D.B., an 18-year-old from Mississippi, claimed excessive use of the platforms led to anxiety, depression, addiction, self-harm and an eating disorder.

The companies have denied the allegations. They maintain that they have implemented extensive measures to help protect teenagers and younger users on their platforms.

    Wider Litigation Continues

The settlements follow another bellwether case that ended before trial in July after a teenage plaintiff withdrew claims against Meta when the remaining defendants reached settlements.

Earlier this year, the first trial in the broader litigation concluded with a jury awarding $4.2 million against Meta and $1.8 million against Google. The case involved a woman who alleged she became addicted to social media platforms at a young age because of their attention-grabbing design. TikTok and Snap settled their portions of that case before trial.

Meanwhile, about 2,600 similar lawsuits remain pending in California federal court. Those cases have been brought by individuals, school districts, municipalities and states. In addition, nearly every US state attorney general has filed separate lawsuits against social media companies in their respective state courts.

The broader litigation continues to examine allegations that major social media platforms are intentionally designed to encourage excessive use and negatively affect the mental health of young users. The companies have consistently denied those claims while stating that they continue to invest in safety features and protections for younger audiences.
