SpaceX IPO Soars As Valuation Nears $2 Trillion
SpaceX was poised for a spectacular stock market debut on Nasdaq on Friday, with shares expected to surge around 30% above their initial public offering price. The strong opening could push the company’s market valuation beyond $2 trillion, placing it among the largest publicly traded companies in the United States.
The highly anticipated listing marks a major milestone for the aerospace company led by Elon Musk and represents the largest IPO ever completed.
Shares Set For Strong Market Debut
SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 per share, raising approximately $75 billion and giving the company an initial valuation of $1.77 trillion. Indications ahead of trading suggested the stock could open near $175 per share, potentially lifting its market capitalisation above the $2 trillion mark.
The debut has drawn intense attention from investors, exchanges and trading firms. Market participants are closely monitoring the launch because of the enormous trading volumes expected during the first day.
Unlike most stocks, newly listed shares often begin trading later in the session. Nasdaq and the underwriting banks were expected to delay the opening until buy and sell orders reached a balanced level.
Historic Listing Reshapes IPO Market
The offering eclipsed the previous record set by Saudi Aramco in 2019, with proceeds more than twice as large. The transaction also highlights growing investor appetite for large-scale technology and innovation-focused listings.
Analysts view the flotation as an important test for future public offerings, particularly for artificial intelligence firms expected to seek listings in the coming years.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen officially marked the occasion by ringing the Nasdaq opening bell.
The debut also reinforced Musk’s position as one of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs. Despite reporting a loss of nearly $5 billion last year, investors continue to place significant value on the company’s long-term growth prospects.
Investors Focus On Future Growth
Many investors believe SpaceX’s value lies not only in its existing businesses but also in its future opportunities. The company operates one of the world’s most active launch systems and generates revenue through its satellite internet network, Starlink.
SpaceX estimates its addressable market at $28.5 trillion, which it describes as the largest commercial opportunity in history. The company says it has launched more than four-fifths of all mass sent into orbit over the past three years.
Some fund managers compare SpaceX to Tesla, arguing that both companies combine established operations with ambitious long-term projects that could transform entire industries.
Index Inclusion Could Drive Demand
Investors are also watching for SpaceX’s expected inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 index. Under Nasdaq’s revised fast-entry rules, the company could join the benchmark within weeks rather than waiting many months.
Index inclusion would require passive investment funds and exchange-traded funds to purchase shares, potentially creating additional demand for the stock.
However, some analysts warn that the company’s valuation remains difficult to justify using traditional financial metrics. With projected revenue of $18.7 billion in 2025, SpaceX would trade at a price-to-revenue multiple far above most major technology companies.
Research firm Morningstar has estimated a fair value closer to $780 billion, significantly below the valuation implied by the IPO.
Competition And Valuation Questions Remain
Despite investor enthusiasm, challenges remain. Rivals such as Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, continue to expand commercial space operations and compete for government contracts.
The stock market reaction also affected other space-focused companies. Shares of Intuitive Machines, Planet Labs and Satellogic fell as investors repositioned portfolios ahead of SpaceX’s arrival.
While opinions differ on whether the valuation is justified, investors broadly agree that the company’s market debut represents one of the most significant moments in modern stock market history.
