Anthropic Rebuilds Ties With Trump Administration Ahead of Planned IPO

A months-long dispute between artificial intelligence company Anthropic and the Trump administration is showing signs of easing across parts of the U.S. government, as the AI developer prepares for a public listing that could rank among the largest in history.

Relations deteriorated earlier this year after Anthropic refused to permit the U.S. military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems. The disagreement escalated when the Department of Defense designated the company a “supply-chain risk”, a label that effectively bars thousands of defence contractors from using Anthropic’s technology on military-related projects.

Although the dispute remains unresolved, recent meetings between senior company executives and government officials suggest both sides are seeking a more constructive relationship.

    Pentagon Dispute Continues

The conflict began when the Defense Department classified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk in March. The designation marked the first time a U.S.-based company had received the label, which is typically associated with organisations linked to foreign adversaries.

As a result, contractors working with the U.S. military were restricted from using Anthropic’s AI models in defence-related work.

Anthropic subsequently challenged the decision in court. Despite signs of improved communication, legal proceedings remain active, with both sides continuing to submit arguments regarding the designation.

Government contracts attorney Franklin Turner said such classifications can significantly affect a company’s prospects.

According to Turner, any indication that the government is distancing itself from a company can create substantial business challenges and may continue to weigh on confidence until the dispute is resolved.

    White House Engagement Signals Improvement

A notable sign of improving relations emerged in April when Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei visited the White House for discussions with administration officials.

The meeting marked the first direct engagement between the company and the administration since tensions escalated earlier in the year.

Further evidence of a thaw came when the White House invited Amodei to attend a planned executive order signing ceremony on artificial intelligence in May. Although that event was ultimately cancelled, the invitation itself was viewed as a positive signal.

President Donald Trump later signed the AI executive order this week. Following the announcement, Anthropic stated publicly that it looked forward to collaborating with the administration on implementing the new policy framework.

Neither the White House nor Anthropic provided detailed public comments regarding the current state of their relationship.

Discussions Focus on Cybersecurity and AI Risks

Anthropic has also engaged with senior administration officials on broader AI policy and national security issues.

The company reportedly held discussions with National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross regarding Mythos, its most advanced artificial intelligence system. The talks focused on protecting critical infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats that could be enabled by advanced AI technologies.

Critical infrastructure includes sectors such as banking, healthcare, emergency services and other systems considered essential to national security and economic stability.

In addition, Anthropic representatives met with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during the spring to discuss AI development and possible presidential actions related to emerging technologies.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, those conversations contributed to the administration’s executive order issued on 2 June, which calls on leading AI developers to provide their most advanced systems for cybersecurity testing.

    IPO Plans Add Strategic Importance

The improving relationship comes at a crucial time for Anthropic as it prepares for a stock market debut that could value the company at approximately $1 trillion.

Investor confidence in major technology companies is often influenced by their relationships with regulators and policymakers, particularly when their products intersect with national security concerns.

Harrison Rolfes, a senior research analyst at PitchBook, described the government dispute as a near-term challenge rather than a long-term threat, suggesting stronger engagement with policymakers could reassure investors ahead of a public offering.

Military Tensions Have Not Fully Disappeared

Despite progress elsewhere within the administration, Anthropic’s relationship with the Pentagon remains strained.

The company was not included in an Army-run artificial intelligence cyberattack simulation held in April. The exercise involved cybersecurity leaders from several prominent AI developers, including Google and OpenAI.

The exclusion highlighted that while dialogue with other government agencies appears to be improving, the dispute with the Defense Department continues to create friction.

For now, Anthropic finds itself balancing legal battles with renewed policy engagement as it seeks to strengthen government ties while preparing for one of the most closely watched technology listings in recent years.
